Mouse archiving and distribution
Archiving services are provided by the CryoUnit at BSRC Fleming, which offers maintenance, revival and transportation of mutant strains through embryo rederivation, cryopreservation and recovery of mouse embryo and sperm.
The CryoUnit is a member of the European Mouse Mutant Archive and operates in accordance with EMMA standards and protocols. To date, more than 300 cryopreserved lines are kept in the CryoBank among which transgenic, knockout and CRE lines. These lines are actively revived and distributed, thus continuously ensuring the good quality of cryopreserved material.
All cryopreserved material is stored into our CryoBank in liquid nitrogen tanks. The maintenance and replenishment of all cryopreserved lines is our responsibility. We also take over the distribution of cryopreserved material of mouse lines deposited into our CryoBank, including EMMA lines assigned to our node.
Sperm cryopreservation

Three fertile males are provided by the investigator, at the age of 8 to 12 weeks. For every male we obtain 10 samples in cryo-straws that are stored in liquid nitrogen at -196°C.
Embryo cryopreservation​
​
The facility generates frozen stock of mouse lines in the form of embryos. The service is applied both for either strains deposited to the European Mouse Mutant Archive (EMMA) network as well as for other strains according to users' requirements.
Rederivation
​
The Facility generates live mice by performing surgical transfer of embryos recovered from a cryopreserved stock (kept into our CryoBank or imported) or from fresh embryos collected by us. All live mice supplied by this service, have a specific-pathogen-free (SPF) status according to top FELASA guidelines.
In vitro fertilization
IVF is a method of assisted reproduction, in which fresh or cryopreserved sperm is used to fertilize mature oocytes in a tissue culture dish, producing a large number of embryos in a short time. This service is provided for revival of lines whose sperm has been cryopreserved into our CryoBank or others. Additionally, it can be used as a rederivation method in case of males with fertility problems.
